5 Strange Scholarships That Could Help You Pay for College
Dec 27, 2011
College is expensive, and for many students scholarships provide necessary funding for the experience. Are you a student looking for scholarship money? Do you think you're sore out of luck? Think again! There's a scholarship out there for everyone, even the strangest among you. If that sounds like you, check out these weird scholarships that will help you pay your college fees using your 'unique' abilities.
Kor Memorial Scholarship
Sounds official, doesn't it? It is a real scholarship, but the place it's from sounds out of this world. The Klingon Language Institute, yes we're talking about Star Trek here, offers $500 to a student every year to help with his or her studies. You don't even have to speak Klingon to get it, though they admit that does help. All you have to do is be interested in language studies. If you're shooting for a degree in any language, round up a few letters of recommendation, create a resume of your experiences and write a nice essay. You might just be funded for college by Klingons.
Duct Tape 'Stuck at Prom' Scholarship
Everyone knows that duct tape is a miraculous tool that can fix just about everything. But who knew that it could get you a scholarship? All you have to do is get really crafty and make your prom outfit from duct tape, then submit it to the Duck brand duct tape site. People in the past have made amazing outfits, so no slouching off if you try it. If you make it into the top ten, you could get anywhere from $500-$5,000 depending on where you're ranked. You seem to do better if you're in a couple and you're both dressed in tape. Sorry college students, this is just for high-schoolers. You can still play with duct tape though.
Tall Club International Scholarship
If you're tall and have strong feelings about your height, this might be something you want to get into. You have to be 21 years of age or older and must be at least 5'10' if you're a woman or 6'2' if you're a man. Also, you have to be a member of the Tall Club International, but you can join online so it's not exactly difficult. After that, you'll have to write a good essay about being tall and submit a bunch of forms with letters of recommendation. If they like what you have to say, you could get a $1,000 scholarship. Who knew being tall wasn't just for reaching things on the highest shelves?
Scholar Athlete Milk Moustache of the Year Award
We've all seen those 'Got Milk' ads of celebs and sports stars posing with milk mustaches. Well, you can be just like them and fund your schooling in the process. To enter for this award, aptly called a SAMMY, you have to be an athlete with a decent GPA who is active in the community. Oh, and you have to pose in a picture with a truly epic milk mustache on your upper lip. You'll have to write a short essay, but for $7,500 wouldn't you say it's worth it? You should probably also like milk, so lactose intolerant people likely shouldn't go for this one.
The Naturist Education Foundation Scholastic Award
Now, you might be thinking that a naturist is someone who loves trees and birds. Well, you're sort of right. A naturist does do all those things, but they do it while naked. That's right, this is a nudist scholarship. The Naturist Education Foundation offers $1,000 twice a year to students enrolled in any college in any degree path, and there is no limit on how many essays you can submit. The catch? You have to be a member of the Naturist Society or live in a nudist colony to qualify. Maybe it's time to really ask yourself how far you'd go to pay for college.
