Find out about classes, online study options and the advantages of professional certification. Schools offering Anesthesia Technology degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

What's an Associate Degree Program in Anesthesiology?

An associate's program in anesthesia or anesthesia technology is designed to prepare you for work as an anesthesia technician. You'll learn how to maintain anesthesia equipment and monitor patients during anesthetic procedures. Prerequisites for program entry may include current immunization records, CPR certification and completion of college-level math, chemistry and anatomy courses. You can usually earn an associate's degree in two years.

What Classes Will I Take?

You'll take general education courses in communications, English composition and introductory psychology. Core topics in an anesthesiology associate's program include anesthesiology instrumentation, medical terminology, pharmacology, patient assessment and EKG interpretation. You'll complete multiple clinical practicums under the supervision of a professional anesthesiologist or anesthesia technologist.

Can I Earn It Online?

Due to hands-on learning requirements, you typically won't be able to complete an entire anesthesiology program via distance learning. However, some schools offer courses online that can help you fulfill degree requirements; online topics could include medical terminology, anatomy or anesthetic pharmacology. Some schools only allow prospective students with work experience or certification in a related medical field to enroll in these courses. In order to take online classes, you'll need a computer with high-speed Internet access. Additional software may be required, like Microsoft Word or PowerPoint.

What Can I Do After Graduation?

Completion of an anesthesiology associate's program may qualify you to sit for the technician certification exam offered by the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians (ASATT). While certification isn't necessarily required in order to work as an anesthesia technician, some employers prefer job applicants who are certified. You may also choose to pursue a bachelor's degree in a related medical field, like nursing or healthcare administration.
