Certification and Career Information for Barbers in Southern California
Barbers must obtain licensure, and the processes differ by state. The Office of Consumer Affairs' Board of Barbering and Cosmetology administers the licensing process in California. To be eligible, you must take a - 1,500-hour-long - training course from an approved school.
Barbering-only programs are often difficult to find, but general cosmetology training is more commonly offered. Because of this, the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology allows applicants to have completed a board-approved apprenticeship in the field or complete board-approved cosmetology training and a barbering crossover course (www.barbercosmo.ca.gov).
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment for barbers was estimated to grow at a rate of 7% during the 2010-2020 decade (www.bls.gov). Other personal appearance workers, such as cosmetologists, hairdressers and stylists, were expected to have a higher growth of approximately 14%. The overall mean wage for barbers in the entire state was about $24,000, compared to $26,000 for cosmetologists.

The Academy of Barbering Arts - open since 2004 - allows its teaching staff to share their experience with the school's nearly 150 students in order to help them become successful barbers and cosmetologists. During your training, you'll receive 1500 clock hours of practical training in skills such as haircuts and styles, shaving, hair curling, coloring, processing and relaxing. Following your training, you'll be eligible to take the state exam. The academy also offers a 400-hour crossover course for those who have been trained at a cosmetology school, but would like to be licensed as a barber and a 600-hour instructor trainee course for potential teachers of hair cutting and styling courses.

The courses at Mojave Barber College are designed to educated students in the art of barbering so that they may obtain their state license. If you qualify, financial aid is available. Job placement assistance is also offered. Classes are taught Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm.
