Associate's degrees in business management give you leadership and communication skills that can help you manage an office. Some programs allow you to choose a concentration that allows you to focus on an area such as marketing, corporations or small businesses. These degree programs prepare you for entry-level work in a range of settings, and you learn how to manage office resources, lead personnel and maintain an organized workplace.

What Courses Will I Take?

Early in your program, you gain a broad understanding of business practices, human resources, government regulations and business types. You also take courses in accounting and finance, computers, economics, marketing and communications. Lessons may discuss business law and ethics. Other courses might include word processing, desktop publishing and information management.

Office equipment and computer applications are also covered, including discussion of software such as the Microsoft Office suite. Often, a business management associate's degree program includes instruction in technology's role in the workplace. Some programs include electives including e-commerce, microcomputer applications and high-tech productivity enhancement products.

How Do Online Programs Work?

Typically, online associate's degree programs in business management require you to be able to manage your time and work efficiently on your own schedule. When you enroll, you receive access to an online classroom platform that allows you to interact with instructors and classmates on message boards. Lectures are often conveyed via online video, and you also access notes and reading materials through the Internet. Although you work on your own time, you usually have to adhere to class due dates and school schedules.

What Kind of Job Will I Find?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), an associate's degree in business management can get you a job as an office manager in smaller companies. If you want to advance to a higher position or manage a larger office, you might need to earn at least a bachelor's degree. The BLS also reported that membership in The Association of Professional Office Managers gives you access to online training materials that might help you advance in your profession (www.bls.gov).
