What Degree Levels are Available in E-Commerce Programs?

E-commerce degrees are becoming more popular; in addition to the bachelor's-level major, you can also earn an associate's degree or a master's degree in e-commerce. Many programs offer specializations such as database technologies, software engineering, network security and human-computer interaction. Associate's degrees typically take about two full-time years to complete; bachelor's degrees normally take four years, and master's programs can take 2-3 years to finish. Most schools permit you to attend part-time if you cannot commit to a full-time schedule.

Are There Prerequisites?

Prerequisites for entering an e-commerce degree program vary depending on the degree level. All programs of this nature will expect you to have at least a basic understanding of the Internet. Most associate's and bachelor's programs will require at least a high school diploma or equivalent. Master's degrees programs typically require a bachelor's degree, preferably in a related field such as computer science, marketing or business. Other prerequisites will vary by school and may include a minimum grade point average or acceptable score on required tests.

What Will I Learn?

As you might expect, most e-commerce programs include a combination of business, marketing and sales classes coupled with computer science and information technology coursework. Associate's and bachelor's programs will likely have general education requirements in addition to core classes, which are classes related directly to the major.

Examples of core coursework common to an associate's program might include the following topics:

  • Introductory electronic commerce
  • Principles of Internet security
  • IT multimedia
  • Website development
  • Business economics
  • Introductory programming

Typical core topics studied in a bachelor's-level program include those listed below:

  • Web design principles
  • Consumer behavior
  • Managerial accounting
  • Internet sales
  • Web authoring
  • Marketing principles

Master's-level e-commerce course offerings include the following examples:

  • IT infrastructure
  • E-commerce public policy and law
  • Financial reporting
  • Internet supply chain management
  • Global software development

Can I Earn it Online?

You can earn an associate's, bachelor's or even master's degree in e-commerce fully online, although these programs are somewhat uncommon. The curriculum of an online degree program is often identical or very similar to a traditional curriculum, except that instead of attending class on a campus, you receive coursework, exchange assignments and take tests via the distance-learning website of the school.

In addition to a computer with Internet access, you may need additional software or peripheral equipment in order to participate in online classes. If you're not comfortable taking all of your coursework online, some schools may also offer a hybrid or blended program, which would include a mix of online and in-person classes.
