What Education Do I Need to Become a Sports Agent?

Because it's mostly an entrepreneurial profession, there is no standardized educational path for sports agents or a specific degree you can earn to become one. Some sports agents have a background in business, while others may have a background in athletics. Although there is no one perfect degree path, it could be helpful to have a bachelor's degree in business, sports administration or sports and recreation management.

Programs in sports administration are multidisciplinary and mix concepts from accounting, business administration, communications, marketing, law and event management. Sports and recreation management programs cover many of the same business topics, but are more oriented towards activities and the leisure services industry. Some have concentrations in facilities management or coaching. Both types of program frequently offer internship opportunities through which you can make contacts and establish relationships with others in the industry. In some instances, the internships are with sports teams or other professional organizations.

Earning a 3-year law degree can also enhance your credentials and competency for the position. Contract law, labor law, negotiation and estate planning are relevant areas to concentrate your studies. Finally, in-depth knowledge of a particular sport or sports is essential. You can gain this experience by either competing as a professional athlete (many agents are former pro athletes) or actively following the sports press. A bachelor's degree in business administration is another option you may consider. Many schools offer Bachelor of Business Administration degree programs with specialized study in sports management. These programs cover business fundamentals such as management, marketing, finance and accounting, as well sports related topics such as facilities management, sport marketing and sport contracts.

What are My Certification Options?

The representation function encompasses a number of tasks, including negotiating salaries and endorsements, ensuring that teams honor the terms of contracts and arranging interviews and public appearances. You may also have to confer with clients to discuss salary prospects, endorsement opportunities, the status of contract negotiations and other actions you're taking on their behalf.Y ou'll need to keep yourself informed of sports trends related to player salaries and benefits.
