Management Information Systems Master's Degree

Information technology has become an increasingly important aspect of businesses and industries. Information systems managers have a firm grasp of computer software, an understanding of business policies and a firm technological orientation. If this sounds like you, you might want to consider pursuing a master's degree program in management information systems. Read on for more information. Schools offering Business Information Systems degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

Why Do I Need a Management Information Systems Master's Degree?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), a bachelor's degree in a computer-related area, such as computer science, management information systems (MIS) or information science, may qualify you for a management position (www.bls.gov). However, the BLS further states that holding a master's degree may give you an employment advantage.

A master's program will train you to plan, direct and oversee data processing and systems analysis and supervise information technicians. Additionally, you will learn to ensure the availability, safety and continuity of information within your company or organization.

What Are the Prerequisites?

In order to qualify for a program, you must hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited college. Often you may be required to have a number of years of appropriate work experience. You may have to submit GRE or GMAT scores. In addition, programs often call for you to complete a number of prerequisite courses, such as statistics, accounting and college algebra. You may be required to have experience in a programming language, such as Java, C++ or Visual Basic.

What Will I Learn?

Depending on whether you attend full- or part-time, it can take you 2-5 years to complete a program consisting of 30-36 credits. Completion of a program can result in earning a Master of Management Information Systems or Master of Science with a concentration in management information systems. Typical courses you might encounter include systems analysis and design, software design and engineering, project management, data mining, economics and statistics.

You may be required to complete an internship at a school-partnered company, independent company, agency or organization. Schools may give you the option of writing and defending a thesis or completing a capstone project.

What Online Opportunities Are Available to Me?

If you're already employed in the information technology field, you may have the opportunity to earn your degree online. Often, your work experience can take the place of an internship, such as those offered in on-campus programs. You communicate and submit assignments by way of a course management system, like Blackboard.

What Is the Career Outlook With This Degree?

In May 2010, the BLS projected employment opportunities for computer and information systems managers would increase 17% from 2008-2018. This is much faster than the national average for all occupations. This increase is due in part to the development and installation of newer, more sophisticated technology in all businesses. In May 2010, the BLS determined the mean annual wage for computer and information systems managers to be $123,280.
