What Kinds of Programs are Available at Ministry Schools?

Ministry schools and seminaries offer programs ranging from certificates to doctoral degrees. Some common undergraduate degrees could include an Associate of Arts in Christian Ministry or bachelor's degrees in church ministry. You can also find Master of Arts in Christian Ministry and Doctor of Ministry programs. Since ministry schools and seminaries are affiliated with different church denominations, they could offer degrees and programs that line up with the needs and philosophy of that denomination.

What are the Requirements?

Schools that offer undergraduate ministerial education generally require you to have a high school diploma. You may also need the recommendation of a minister or church official. Additionally, some schools have doctrinal requirements, such as church attendance or fealty to the Gospel, and stricter codes of conduct than typical schools.

In graduate schools of ministry, the admissions process could require sponsorship with a home church or church official and, depending on the denomination, statement of adherence to a Creed. Likewise, depending on the structure of the denomination, Christian Baptism could be expected, as well as evidence of completion of certain Rites of Passage. For instance, a Catholic seminary can expect you to have completed First Communion and the sacrament of Confirmation; on the other hand, a United Church of Christ-affiliated seminary might not have ritual-related expectations.

What Kinds of Classes Will I Take?

In bachelor's degree programs, you can take courses in spiritual formation, church history, systematic theology, biblical interpretation and sermon preparation. Some programs offer concentrations, which could include educational ministries or evangelism. As a master's-level student, you could take courses in biblical languages, philosophy, Christian traditions or ministry practice. In a doctoral program, you might take courses on preaching performance and complete a thesis and ministry projects.

What Options Do I Have as a Non-Traditional Student?

Many of the schools and seminaries offer classes through online study or a hybrid of online and on-campus courses. Some schools could impose limitations on how many online classes degree-seeking students are allowed to take. Online courses require significant interaction with other students and faculty through discussion boards.
