Are There Schools That Offer Online Biomedical Technician Programs?

Online biomedical technician programs aren't common, though there are a few schools that offer hybrid programs that combine online and on-campus learning. Presented as either biomedical equipment technology or biomedical engineering technology (BMET), these programs confer associate and bachelor's degrees. Teaching methodologies include streaming video, online discussions, interactive classrooms and digital presentations. Depending on the program, you might be able to take your exams online as well.

Though you'll take some or all of your coursework online, you'll need to participate in some hands-on practice during the program at either degree level. Generally, associate degree programs offer limited online courses and provide you with the majority of your introduction to medical equipment. If you already have a background in BMET, you can usually take more online courses in a bachelor's degree program. However, you'll likely need to participate in a supervised practicum at a health care facility.

What Courses Would I Take?

Online courses introduce you to the different types of medical equipment and devices you'll encounter as a biomedical technician. You'll also cover basic computer and electronics topics, such as networking and specific hardware. Some general course topics you might encounter include biology, radiography, safety regulations, patient care and medical communications.

What Can I Do with This Training?

Earning an associate degree can qualify you to become an electrical or biomedical engineering technician in a number of medical institutions, such as a hospital, clinic, doctor's office or nursing care facility. You'd be involved in the testing, maintenance, design and repair of the technology used in patient care. Other possible employers include home heath care services, medical equipment manufacturers and electronic repair shops. Earning a bachelor's degree might prepare you for supervisory or management positions in the field.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) anticipated a 27% increase in demand for medical equipment technicians, including biomedical technicians, between 2008-2018 (www.bls.gov). Innovative and sophisticated medical technology and a rise in health care services was expected to drive the need for qualified professionals. The BLS stated that you could increase your employment opportunities with a BMET degree and a willingness to move to underserved areas, such as rural communities.
