There are several 2-year public school options for students seeking certificate training in preparation for careers and certification in phlebotomy in California. Programs generally require that applicants have professional CPR certification; students must also submit to a background check and provide proof of a physical exam and immunizations received. A prerequisite class in medical terminology and proof of liability insurance may also be required. These 1-2 semester programs blend lecture and lab learning, plus hands-on clinical practice. At the beginning of the program, you hone your skills in an on-campus skills lab before working at a clinical site under supervision. This program trains you to work as a phlebotomist in a clinic, laboratory or hospital. During your studies, you learn how to perform venipunctures, collect specimens and clean lab equipment. The curriculum also includes a 120-hour clinical experience.


Certification Requirements for Phlebotomists in California

You must be certified to work as a phlebotomist in California, and the state offers three phlebotomist certifications. The limited phlebotomy technician certification allows the holder to only perform skin punctures to collect blood, and the certified phlebotomy technician 1 certification (CPT 1) authorizes the holder to perform skin punctures and venipunctures. Finally, the certified phlebotomy technician 2 certification (CPT 2) lets the holder perform skin punctures, arterial punctures and venipunctures.

Certification requirements include graduating from high school, completing an approved phlebotomy training program, having related experience and passing an exam. The credential lasts for 2 years, and then you need to submit proof of completing 6 continuing education hours during that time to renew it. The California Department of Public Health lists approved phlebotomy certification exams on its site.

Salary and Employment Outlook for Phlebotomists

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) includes phlebotomists in its medical and clinical lab technicians category. The BLS projected that jobs for such technicians would increase 15% between 2010 and 2020. The BLS also reported that, in May 2011, there were about 16,700 clinical lab and medical technicians employed in California who earned a mean wage of about $43,400.
