#1. MIT

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has the best selection of free science courses online. Courses consist of text, audio and video and cover a wide range of topics, including earth and planetary sciences, science technology, brain and cognitive sciences, health sciences and nuclear science.

#2. UC Berkeley

Each semester, the University of California, Berkeley webcasts certain courses that can be replayed on demand. There are ton of free science courses to choose from, including courses that focus on biology, chemistry, physics and other sciences. Courses can be viewed with a free RealPlayer plugin or downloaded as an mp3 file.

#3. Carnegie Mellon University

Carnegie Mellon University's Open Learning Initiative makes three different science courses available for free online. Course offerings include biology, chemistry and physics. All courses contain a mix of text, videos, and virtual lab activities to ensure the ultimate learning experience.

#4. College of Eastern Utah

The College of Eastern Utah offers a nice selection of free science courses online through their OpenCourseWare program. Courses cover topics like chemistry and astronomy and include everything from lectures and demonstrations to hand-outs and assignments.

The OpenLearn website from the UK's Open University provides access to more than 50 free science and nature courses. Most of the courses are text-based and are labeled as introductory, intermediate or advanced so it is easy to decide which course to take.

The free science courses offered online through the University of Utah OpenCourseWare program provide instruction in biology, chemistry, physics and human physiology. Course materials are organized well and include lectures, assignments, images and other educational resources.

The Tufts University School of Arts and Sciences offers internationally renowned courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The modern physics course alone is worth checking out. All of the free courses are easy to download and include lectures, assignments, quizzes and exams.

The only free science courses offered through the University of Massachusetts, Boston are general biology courses, but they are both very good. General Biology I examines life processes at the molecular and cellular level and General Biology II examines process at the organismal and population levels.

#9. John Hopkins

The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health offers free online access to some of the school's most popular health and social science courses. Lectures, lecture notes, reading assignments and hand-outs make up the bulk of the course material.

#10. University of Southern Queensland

The University of Southern Queensland in Australia offers a wide range of free courses through their OpenCourseWare program. Only one is devoted to science, but it is a great course for anyone who wants to brush up on general science principles. The course includes a study schedule, study materials, assignments and assessment tests.
