Rutgers University offers a bachelor's degree in Hospitality Management. The program was created to help students pursue a career in the hospitality industry in many areas, such as Hotel Management, casino administration and food and beverage operations. The curriculum is based on general education requirements with a special core in hospitality. Rutgers utilizes out-of-classroom learning experiences to help students learn the course competencies.
Degree Requirements
The general curricular requirements for the bachelor's in Hospitality Management program include six credits in English composition. Students must also complete three credits from the history, philosophy and religion departments. The program requires six credits in the social science disciplines of economics, political science, sociology, anthropology and urban studies. Four credits must be completed in the natural science disciplines of astronomy, biological sciences, chemistry, geology and physics and six credits must be completed in mathematics or computer science disciplines. Other requirements include three credits in nutrition and 20 credits from electives in arts and sciences.
Hospitality Management Core Requirements
Hospitality Management courses required for all Hospitality Management degrees include advanced hotel management, advanced marketing in the hospitality industry and advanced legal aspects in hospitality. Students must also take advanced human resource management in hospitality, advanced food and beverage management and operations and advanced financial accounting for the hospitality industry.
Major Area Electives
The student is required to take 54 credits of an approved elective to satisfy the degree requirements. One of the electives is an internship in hospitality. Colleges recommend internships to give the student valuable hands-on experience in their chosen field.
