What Is Mastercam?

Mastercam is a computer aided design and manufacturing tool that was created by CNC Software, a Massachusetts based software company. The program allows machinists to both design and manufacture parts using a highly sophisticated tool control technology. According to CIMdata, Inc., more computer numerical controlled (CNC) programmers use Mastercam than any other computer automated design or manufacturing program in the world.
Mastercam successfully incorporates a number of computer aided tools in order to provide machinists with the ability to manufacture a variety of parts. These tools include:
Included in the Mastercam products below are powerful 3D computer aided design capabilities, including geometry modeling, blending, trimming and variable filleting. As an add-on to the products below, CNS offers a Parasolid-based design tool. This tool offers excellent capabilities, such as shelling, chamfering and a history tree.
The mill tool allows for a variety of functions, such as single and multi-surface roughing and flexible pocketing. There are currently four mill products:
- Level 1 - 2 and half-axis design and machining
- Level 2 - 3-axis (Level 1 and additional functionalities)
- Level 3 - 3-axis (Level 1 and 2 and additional functionalities)
- Multiaxis - machining with 4- and 5-axis added to Level 3 Mill
The lathe tool allows machinists to execute the cuts of a traditional lathe using computer-based automation. Capabilities of the lathe tool include roughing, threading and boring.
The router tool provides for excellent engraving, as well as single and multi-surface roughing and finishing. There are currently four router products:
- Router Plus - router work with 3-axis and builds on basic router.
- Router Pro - adds to router plus and basic router
- Multiaxis - builds on router pro (5-and 4-axis machining)
This tool allows for creation of complete 2- and 4-axis wirepath.
The art tool is an available add-on to the mill and router tools that allows for efficient conversion of 2D artwork into 3D shapes.
