What Is Night School?

Are you an adult looking to complete your education or develop new skills? Or maybe you're a student who needs to complete credits for your high school diploma? Enrolling in night school can fulfill these requirements. Read on for more information.

Night School

Night school typically refers to adult education classes held in the evening hours at middle and high school campuses. For adults, these classes are mainly geared toward personal enrichment and furthering of job or life skills. In other cases, many high schools offer night school as an option for students who are unable to attend day classes or need to retake failed courses to complete the requirements for their high school diplomas.

Night School for Adults

Night school for adults sometimes consists of community programs, which may be offered by non-profit educational organizations or other non-profit agencies. Classes can meet once or twice weekly for several weeks or take place in single-day workshops.

Most night school programs offer adult education classes in recreational hobbies and personal development areas, like fitness and dance, arts and crafts, computers and cooking. English as a Second Language (ESL) courses are also typically available at many night schools for adults wanting to improve their English language skills. In addition to the traditional class format, some courses include field trips to museums, theaters or other local educational attractions.

Night School for High School Students

Some high schools have a night school program in which students who have not completed the educational requirements to obtain a high school diploma can enroll in courses to satisfy these requirements. Night school may be open to students wanting accelerated graduation from high school; however, most night schools are geared toward students who failed to complete required education in a timely and successful manner.

Night school programs may award a high school diploma or prepare students to attain their General Education Diploma (GED). Classes offered in this category typically fall under language arts, social studies, mathematics and science.
