What Is the Average Salary for a Certified Ultrasound Technician?

It is generally acknowledged that Certified Ultrasound Technicians make a higher average salary than non-certified technicians do (BLS, ARDMS and SDMS). Certified Ultrasound Technician

Ultrasound Technicians or sonographers who have graduated from an accredited ultrasound program may seek certification administrated by ARDMS (American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography). ARDMS offers several certifications, including Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS). ARDMS states on its website that Certified Ultrasound Technicians earn more than non-certified technicians do. Certification at present is voluntary, but many employers require it. In addition, ASE (American Society of Echocardiography) states that some insurers of healthcare do not pay for work performed by non-certified Ultrasound Technicians.

Average Salary for a Certified Ultrasound Technician

Registered diagnostic medical sonographers (RDMS) or Certified Ultrasound Technicians had an average salary of $29.80 per hour in 2009, according to RadSciences Group's (a professional employment company) 2009 Allied Health Compensation Review. SDMS' (Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography) salary survey for 2008, found that Ultrasound Technicians had a median salary of approximately $67,000 per year. However, more to the point, SDMS found that the top salary earners had several certifications.

Average Salary for a Certified Ultrasound Technician vs. Non-certified Ultrasound Technician

Ultrasoundjobs.com, in association with ARDMS, posted a salary survey conducted in 2002. The survey found that Ultrasound Technicians who had ARDMS certification made a median hourly salary of $24.00 while those who didn't made a median hourly salary of $20.00.
