What Is the Employment Outlook for Child Development Careers?

If you considering a career in child development, you might be interested in the employment outlook for careers like child care worker, preschool teacher, and teaching assistant. Read on for some insight about what to expect from a career in this field. Schools offering Child & Adolescent Development degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

Career Outlook

The employment outlook for child development careers in general varies, since an education in child development might lead you to a variety of employment opportunities. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS, www.bls.gov), career opportunities in child development were expected to increase from 2012 to 2022 for child care workers, teaching assistants, and preschool teachers at average rates or faster. Specifically, employment for preschool teachers is expected to increase at faster than the employment of child care workers or teaching assistants.

Preschool Teachers

If you choose to pursue a child development career as a preschool teacher, you might be encouraged that the BLS expected these teaching positions to increase at a faster-than-average rate. High turnover and an increase in legislation intended to improve the size and quality of public education have improved the employment outlook for preschool teachers. According to the BLS, preschool education positions are expected to increase 17% between 2012 and 2022. The BLS reported the median annual salary for preschool teachers, also called day care center teachers, at $27,130 in May 2012.

Child Care Workers

If you're interested in a child development career, another option is a position as a child care worker. The BLS forecasted an employment increase of 14% between 2012 and 2022, which is on the high end of the average range predicted for all occupations. Your chances for employment are favorable as a result of an increase in many state governments' focus on early education and a high turnover rate in this career. As of May 2012, the middle-half salary range for beginning child care workers was $17,600 to $23,940, per the BLS.

Teaching Assistants

Working as a teaching assistant is another child development career that has an encouraging employment outlook between 2012 and 2022. Your chances for employment are especially good if you have experience working with students with special needs or teaching English as a second language (ESL). However, you should be aware that many school districts employ teaching assistants on a part-time basis. BLS predicts that employment for teaching assistants might grow only at about the same rate as all occupations nationwide, about nine percent. In May 2012, the BLS published the median annual salary for teaching assistants, also called teacher aides, as $23,640.
