Schools with Online Organic Chemistry Courses

Oregon State University Extended Campus

Oregon State University's Extended Campus offers a two-course organic chemistry sequence online in conjunction with its Department of Chemistry. This sequence could be appropriate for you if you have already completed a bachelor's program and wish to enter pre-professional studies in the areas of medicine, dentistry, optometry, pharmacy or other health professions. You may also wish to take this course if you're currently enrolled in an undergraduate program that requires organic chemistry.

Oregon State University requires you to complete a full year of general chemistry as a prerequisite to qualifying for enrollment in an organic chemistry online course. The online format includes interactive discussion groups, exams, quizzes, homework and online help from the instructor. The lab that accompanies this course is required and offered as an online/on-campus hybrid.

North Carolina State University

If you are enrolled as an undergraduate or non-degree seeking student, North Carolina State University offers an online course sequence in organic chemistry. The course covers topics such as synthesis of carbon compounds, structure and bonding, spectral analysis and stereochemistry. While enrolled, your lectures and accompanying homework assignments are delivered through the school's WebAssign system. You also have access to class discussion boards, course updates and answer keys via the Internet.

All exams must be proctored and can be taken at the campus testing center, or if you're over 50 miles from campus, you can take your test through an approved proctoring service. To qualify for admission to these classes, you must have already completed introductory chemistry courses.

University of California Berkeley Extension

An introductory organic chemistry course is offered online by the University of California Berkeley Extension. Prerequisites for this course include introductory chemistry and basic algebra. Your coursework may cover isomerism, living compounds, covalent bonding, molecular structures and properties of a variety of organic and biological compounds. You can interact with your instructors via email. Live chat rooms and class message boards are also included to give you the opportunity to discuss topics with other students. The final exam must be taken either through a facility approved by the university or under the supervision of an authorized proctor.
