Before you begin your studies in earnest, you can participate in a pre-college Student Transition Engineering Program (STEP) that offers intensive study and orientation features to prepare you for your engineering program. As a freshman at this school, you can immerse yourself in engineering both academically and socially by joining the female (Hypatia) or male (Galileo) residential community. In your freshman year you can also apply to participate in the Rising Sophomore Abroad Program that will take you on a faculty-led project excursion to work with students and engineers in Germany, Switzerland or Italy. In this program, you'll study engineering fundamentals applicable to all disciplines and, through team-based project work, you'll get a broad taste of the engineering paths you can choose from. The school discourages students from choosing a discipline until they complete this program. You don't have to attend Virginia Tech to earn your master's degree from Virginia Tech. Through the Commonwealth Graduate Engineering Program, some of the degrees can be earned at collaborative schools throughout the state with courses generally delivered through 2-way video-conferencing. Career Information for Virginia Engineers

Education and Licensing Requirements

An engineer who offers services directly to the public is required to have a Professional Engineer (PE) license. The most common path to qualify for the licensing test includes earning an approved bachelor's degree in engineering, an Engineer-In-Training (EIT) license which you can get while you're still in school, and four years of documented experience. With a doctoral degree approved by ABET Inc. (formerly the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology), you can forego the EIT qualification. With less or unapproved education, you can be required to have anywhere from 6-20 years of experience.

Salaries and Job Prospects

Your wages and employment outlook as an engineer can be vastly different depending on what you do and where you do it. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) broke down information by discipline and region in May 2011 to help you understand your prospects for a variety of engineers.

The BLS predicted that, on a national level, biomedical engineers would see an employment increase of 62% between 2010 and 2020, and in May 2011, those working in Virginia earned a mean annual salary of about $98,000. In that same decade, the BLS stated that chemical engineers were predicted to see only a six percent increase in jobs, but in Virginia they earned a mean annual salary of about $118,000 in May 2011. Mechanical engineers were expected to see a nine percent increase in jobs nationwide and in Virginia, they earned a mean annual salary of about $89,500 in May 2011, according to the BLS.
