As a freshman at Boston University, more commonly known as BU, you'll begin with introductory courses that cover a variety of engineering disciplines. During your first year at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, also known as MIT, you'll be expected to explore your interests and not declare your major until the end of your freshman year. If you'd like to attend to graduate engineering school but your bachelor's degree is in another area such as English or History, you can participate in the Late Entry Accelerated Program (LEAP). MIT allows for a great deal of freedom when planning your graduate study program and encourages inter-departmental work. Regardless of which focus you choose, you'll need to have your program approved by a single department that will become your home base. You will also need to understand that although your credentials might easily qualify you for acceptance, MIT faculty have a finite amount of slots open and you must be accepted by a faculty advisor before you can be accepted into a program. You can earn your Master of Science degree at this school through full-time or part-time study. Another study option includes distance learning through the Blackboard program. If you sign up for this option you can view lectures that have no lab components the day after they're delivered in classrooms. Career and Salary Information for Engineers in the Boston Area

Licensing Requirements

Many engineering disciplines require you to have a Professional Engineer (PE) license. You'll need to get this through Massachusetts' Board of Registration of Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors. There are some exceptions, such as for computer engineers, so you'll need to check with the board to see if your discipline has this requirement.

If you do need a license, the typical path is to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in an engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited program (or related field), pass the Fundamentals of Engineering exam (usually taken after completing a bachelor's degree program) and have a minimum number of years of experience. The final step to earning full PE licensure is passing the Professional Engineering exam. Continuing education may be required to maintain licensure that's required to be renewed periodically, usually every two years.

As of May 2011, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) noted that computer hardware engineers in the Boston-Cambridge-Quincy area earned an annual mean wage of almost $109,000. On a national scale, the BLS predicted that computer hardware engineers would see a nine percent increase in employment opportunities between 2010 and 2020, a slower than average rate.

Electrical Engineers

These engineers are responsible for designing and developing electrical equipment for everything from engines to radar. The BLS cited electrical engineers in the Boston-Cambridge-Quincy area as earning an annual mean salary of above $102,000 in May 2011. The BLS's national employment growth projection for these professionals was six percent between 2010 and 2020, a rate considered slightly below average when compared to other occupations.

Mechanical Engineers
