Studying any of these three disciplines can open up a variety of career possibilities because the knowledge you receive is essential to many engineering fields. Your freshman year will be spent studying math and science to give you a foundation for your engineering classes. The mechanical engineering program allows you to study topics such as robots and automation, heat transfer, solid mechanics and fluids. In the electrical engineering program, you'll be able to choose an emphasis or concentration in your junior year from options including digital signal processing, power systems, control systems, communication systems or very large scale integration (VLSI) circuits and systems. If you have a bachelor's degree in a non-engineering discipline, you can still apply, provided you're committed to taking a sequence of courses that will bring you up-to-speed for your engineering graduate studies. If circumstances don't permit you to study on a full-time, continuous basis, you can take up to six years to complete your degree program. Licensing Requirements for Professional Engineers in Washington State

In the state of Washington, you're required to hold a Professional Engineers (PE) license to offer your services to the public or oversee other engineers. You can choose from several paths to qualify to take the test for this license, but the most common way is to complete an approved bachelor's degree program in engineering and accumulate four years of documented experience. Other paths may require you to earn a training license and acquire up to eight years of experience.

Job Prospects and Salary Info for Engineers

Although salary info and job outlook projections aren't available for engineers as a whole, they are available by engineering discipline. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) provides data on the May 2011 annual mean wages for various types of engineers working in the state of Washington and national job projections for the 2010-2020 decade. Electrical engineers in Washington earned over $92,000 annually, and, nationwide, these professionals were predicted to see job opportunities increase seven percent. Aerospace engineers were only expected to see a five percent increase nationally, but in the state of Washington they earned more than $101,000 annually. Nationwide, civil engineers were predicted to see a 19% job increase, and those working in Washington had earnings that exceeded $83,000 per year.
