The college's Grove School of Engineering in upper Manhattan is the only public school of engineering in New York City. The school offers a total of seven ABET-accredited Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) programs. The New York Institute of Technology has campuses in Old Westbury and Manhattan, both of which offer a master's degree in electrical and computer engineering. The degree consists of 36 credits and includes four required courses in probability and stochastic processes, computer architecture, linear systems and digital communications. The program also offers a number of electrical and computer electives, like quantum computing and engineering, nanotechnology, robotics and automata theory, which allow you to gear your education toward a specialty of your interest.


Engineer Licensing Requirements in New York City, NY

Engineering is a broad field, and there is a wide range of specialties from which to choose. Common engineering specialties include chemical, civil, computer hardware, electrical, electronics, environmental, health and safety, industrial, materials and mechanical engineering. Note that most engineers, specifically those who provide professional services that can affect the health, safety or property of the public, need to be licensed as Professional Engineers (PEs).

In most states, obtaining a PE license involves graduating from an engineering program that was accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, earning at least four years of work experience as an Engineer in Training (EIT) and passing the Principles and Practice in Engineering exam; however, New York State does not require you to graduate from an accredited program as long as you meet additional EIT experience requirements.

Salary and Job Growth

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), mean annual wages for engineers tend to be high; as of May 2011, the average salaries for engineers in the state of New York ranged from about $78,000 for mining and geological engineers to about $109,000 for petroleum engineers. BLS findings reveal that different types of engineers face varying rates of job growth in the coming years. Most specialties in the field were projected to have slower-than-average job growth from 2010-2020, compared to other occupations across the nation. On the other hand, health and safety, civil and petroleum engineers will see average job growth rates, and jobs for environmental engineers are expected to increase at a faster-than-average rate of 22%. The best engineering job prospects are in biomedical engineering, which was projected to have a 62% growth in employment in the 10-year period.
