With enrollment in the program, you receive a gun cleaning kit, training manual and various tools, including a screwdriver set, brass hammer and needle file.
The curriculum includes eight broad topics of study, which are divided into more detailed course subsections that teach technical skills necessary for gunsmithing, such as repairing firearms, making ammunition or polishing metal. You also receive a background in gunsmithing business management through lessons in computer bookkeeping skills, entrepreneurship and ancillary business opportunities like gun sales and appraisals. Caldwell College
Targeted at veterans looking for civilian career education and active duty military personnel seeking promotion points, Caldwell College's professional career development program in gunsmithing prepares you to repair firearms at a gun shop or open a business focused on gun repair, restoration and customization. The 260-clock-hour program is self-paced and includes the equipment and books in the program tuition.
Curriculum covers accurization and repair of modern-era firearms, as well as restoration of antique guns. You'll also learn to mount sights and stocks. The program includes instruction on attaining your federal firearms license (FFL). You'll have access to student services by phone or e-mail.
Lenoir Community College
Located in Kinston, North Carolina, Lenoir Community College offers a hybrid online-on campus Associate in Applied Science in Gunsmithing program requiring a total of 68 credit hours of gunsmithing and general education coursework. Many of the practical lessons in repair techniques, adjusting and metal and wood refinishing are taught in hands-on courses; however, you can take the gunsmithing fundamentals courses partially online.
