New York State Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Licensing Requirements
Before you can work as a licensed practical nurse in New York, you must acquire a license from the New York State Education Department. According to its guidelines, you need to be at least 17 years old, be of good, sound character and graduate from a state-approved, 9-month or longer, educational training program. You also must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for practical nurses (NCLEX-PN) administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.
Job Outlook and Salary for New York LPNs
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicted a 22% increase in employment of licensed practical and licensed vocational nurses nationally during the 2010-2020 decade. In May of 2011, the BLS reported that there were approximately 48,000 licensed practical and vocational nurses employed in the state of New York. On average, salaries for these workers were close to $44,000. In the New York City-White Plains-Wayne, NY, and New Jersey metropolitan area, around 19,000 of these nurses earned roughly $50,000 a year.

A total of 48 credits are needed to complete the program, and you'll take courses in pharmacology, nutrition, psychology, human biology, parent-child nursing, medical dosage mathematics and medical nursing. You can apply for a state license after earning the certificate and enroll in the PN to Nursing Pathway program, which leads to an Associate of Applied Science degree.

Niagara County Community College is only minutes away from Buffalo, NY, and offers a practical nursing certificate as part of its nursing curriculum. To earn the certificate, you need to complete 48 credit hours of coursework, including 29 hours of clinical nursing and medical simulation classes. You take additional courses in psychology, human anatomy, pharmacology and physiology. After successfully finishing program elements, you meet the New York State NCLEX-PN licensure exam requirement and can seek employment as an LPN.

A certificate in practical nursing is offered at the Eastern campus of Suffolk County Community College in Riverhead.
