Online Exercise Science Degree Programs

Because of the hands-on nature of the degree, exercise science programs are typically not offered online. However, programs can be found at some schools, either fully or partially online. These programs are offered at the bachelor's or master's degree level. However, some of these bachelor's degree programs may require you to have already have completed some college credits. Below are some schools that offer online exercise science programs.

California University of Pennsylvania

California University of Pennsylvania is located south of Pittsburgh in California, Pennsylvania. The school holds over 9,000 students and was founded over 150 years ago. Online undergraduate programs aren't available in exercise science, but you can earn a Master of Science (M.S.) in Exercise Science and Health Promotion.

Master of Science in Exercise Science and Health Promotion

California University of Pennsylvania offers a 12-month master's degree program that was developed in association with the National Academy of Sports Medicine. The core curriculum includes studies in wellness, kinesiology, leadership, nutrition, exercise physiology and entrepreneurship. In addition, students can choose to specialize in sports performance enhancement, wellness and fitness, sport psychology or rehabilitation.

The exercise science M.S. program is delivered entirely online. You can communicate with teachers and other students through e-mail, discussion boards and live chat features. Laboratory components of the program can be completed at your workplace or at a local campus. Lectures are shown through typed presentations and streaming videos.

Florida Atlantic University

Florida Atlantic University contains seven campuses throughout Florida in cities like Fort Lauderdale and Dania Beach. Established in 1964, the university holds over 170 programs and enrolls 28,000 students. An M.S. in Exercise Science and Health Promotion program is available with a variety of specialization tracks for students to choose from. If you're interested in distance learning, the health promotion track of the M.S. program is offered entirely online.

Master of Science in Exercise Science and Health Promotion

The online health promotion track of Florida Atlantic's MS in exercise science and health promotion includes classes on exercise physiology, wellness, psychology and anatomy. As part of the core M.S. program coursework, you'll develop hands-on CPR and first aid knowledge. Prerequisite classes for this 2-year graduate program include physiology, exercise and health. Online courses can be delivered through interactive Blackboard programs, video recordings and CD-ROM exercises. Although the classes all take place online, exams might need to be completed in a proctored environment.

University of Wisconsin-Superior

The University of Wisconsin-Superior (UW-Superior) is a public university and part of the University of Wisconsin system. It enrolls 2,700 students in 33 undergraduate and 7 graduate programs. UW-Superior offers a hybrid bachelor's degree in physical science with an exercise science concentration. While most of this degree is available online, a few classes must be taken on campus.

Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education

The hybrid exercise science concentration of UW-Superior's bachelor's degree in physical education breaks its program down into virtual lab courses, on-campus labs and practicum, where students get the opportunity to practice their skills. UW-Superior also offers credits for some certifications, including CPR, first aid or lifeguard certifications. Courses can also be transferred in from previous schooling. This degree generally takes four years to complete.
