System management, more commonly called information systems management, is an integral part of the information technology (IT) field. As a system management professional, you oversee the implementation and usage of computers within an organization, especially corporations. Your duties include deciding how and when software systems should be used or upgraded for the benefit of organizational efficiency. If you like working with computers and have an interest in the business world, then a career in system management might be a good fit for you.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the field of system management was expected to expand more than the average for all occupations from 2008-2018 (www.bls.gov). Employment for computer and information systems managers was predicted to grow 17%. The BLS also reported that in May 2010 information systems managers were earning an average of $123,280.

How Can I Work in System Management?

A degree program related to information systems management will give you the best chance to join the system management workforce. Earning an associate's or bachelor's degree in information systems management can provide you with the technical knowledge and skills necessary to get an entry-level position, such as IT support staff or a member of a systems development team. Coursework in information systems management can include computer programming, business analytics, accounting, Web development and auditing, among other topics. Employers often prefer a master's degree in information systems management or an MBA with a technology focus for anyone looking for work as an information systems manager. If you decide to earn a doctoral degree in this field, you can pursue a research career in academia.
