Paramedics are highly-trained medical professionals who respond to emergency calls. They are responsible for providing medical treatment to patients on-the-scene and during transport to a hospital or medical facility. Learn more about a Paramedic's day-to-day job duties and work environment here.

Day-to-Day Duties

Paramedics help people who have been involved in automobile accidents, slip and falls, heart attacks, violent crimes and other incidents. Although Paramedics don't treat patients the way a doctor would, these professionals are responsible for providing emergency medical treatment on-the-scene and during transport to a hospital.

When Paramedics arrive on the scene of an accident, they assess a patient's condition and respond accordingly. If a patient is critically ill or injured, Paramedics must use their equipment and training to monitor and manage the patient's care. This may involve interpreting heart readings, administering oxygen or drugs, moving patients or performing basic life support. Some of the specific day-to-day duties that a Paramedic might perform include trauma assessment, CPR, cardiac life support and spinal stabilization.

Work Environment

Most Paramedics work for ambulance services and fire departments. These Paramedics are required to go wherever they are dispatched, which means that work environments can change on a day-to-day basis. Other Paramedics often find employment through hospitals or other medical facilities. These Paramedics usually treat patients who are in the hospital or in the process of being transferred to another facility via helicopter or ambulance.

All Paramedics, regardless of employer, operate in a work environment that is stressful and potentially dangerous. Paramedics are often responsible for taking charge of a life-or-death situation. There may also be times when Paramedics are asked to risk their own lives and health to care for a violent, diseased or unstable patient.

Despite the risks, there are many people who find this career challenging, exciting and worthwhile. Paramedics have the opportunity to help and improve the lives of others on a daily basis.
