What Does a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Do? - Video

Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (PNPs) are health care providers who specialize in treating children. Most Pediatric Nurse Practitioners start out as registered nurses or nurse practitioners before receiving the necessary training and certifications to become PNPs. Learn more about the day-to-day duties and work environment of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners here.

Day-to-Day Duties

Pediatric Nurse Practitioners work exclusively with infants, children and adolescents. PNPs do many of the same things that regular physicians do: they perform examinations, diagnose illnesses, treat injuries and order laboratory tests. Other day-to-day duties include administering immunizations, counseling families and interpreting diagnostic tests.

Pediatric Nurse Practitioners who specialize in a particular area, such as cardiology or dermatology, may have additional job duties. The same is true of PNPs who focus on treating chronic illnesses like allergies, asthma or diabetes. These professionals are often asked to perform in-depth physical assessments, therapeutic treatments and developmental screenings.

Work Environment

Pediatric Nurse Practitioners can work in a variety of settings. The majority choose to practice in pediatric offices, clinics and hospitals, but jobs are also available in surgical centers and specialty clinics. Regardless of setting, Pediatric Nurse Practitioners work closely with physicians and other health care professionals to provide comprehensive care to children.
